How Bermuda's digital nomad certificate works in 2026: who qualifies, the tax reality, costs, family inclusion, and the limits to understand.
Bermuda built one of the early movers among remote-work permits, and the Work From Bermuda certificate, the island's digital nomad route, remains one of the more credible options for high-earning professionals who want a year in the Atlantic without a full relocation commitment.
The proposition is attractive on its face: live in a well-governed, English-speaking jurisdiction an easy flight from the eastern United States and the UK, work remotely for your overseas employer or your own overseas business, and do so with a clear legal basis to be present. For founders, consultants and senior remote employees, it can be a genuine lifestyle upgrade.
What it is not is a tax-residency strategy. Understanding the difference is the whole game, and it is where this guide focuses.
What the certificate actually is
The Bermuda digital nomad certificate is a residence-by-application permit allowing the holder to live in Bermuda while working for an employer or clients based outside the island. It is aimed at remote workers and, in practice, at independent professionals and business owners whose income arises abroad.
The certificate is typically issued for a period of around one year, with the possibility of renewal, subject to continuing to meet the criteria. It is a permission to reside and work-from-Bermuda for non-Bermudian income, not a path to permanent residency or status, and it should not be confused with either.
Treat the duration, renewal practice and any application fee as matters to confirm at the time of applying. Bermuda has adjusted the programme since launch, and published terms and fees change.
Who qualifies
The programme is designed for self-supporting individuals. In broad terms, applicants are expected to demonstrate:
Income or means. You must show that you can support yourself and any dependants without taking local employment. This is usually evidenced through earnings, a continuing remote role, or business income arising outside Bermuda.
Employment or enterprise abroad. Your work must be for a non-Bermudian employer or your own business serving non-Bermudian clients. The certificate does not entitle you to work in the local labour market.
Clean background and valid health cover. Expect criminal-record checks and a requirement to hold valid health insurance covering your time on the island. Bermuda's healthcare is good but private and expensive, so adequate cover is not a box-ticking exercise.
Students enrolled with overseas institutions have, at points, also been catered for under related arrangements, but the core audience is the working professional.
Families are generally accommodated: spouses and children can typically be included, which is a meaningful advantage over permits that cover the principal only. For a family weighing a year abroad together, that single feature often decides the matter.
The application itself is document-led rather than discretionary in feel: you assemble proof of income, employment or business abroad, background checks and health cover, and submit. There is no interview-heavy process or lengthy residency probation of the kind some jurisdictions impose, which is part of why the route earned its early reputation for being relatively frictionless. That said, "relatively" is the operative word, and incomplete files are the usual cause of delay.
The tax reality, stated plainly
This is the most misunderstood point. Bermuda has no personal income tax and no capital gains tax. That sounds like the headline of a tax plan, but for a one-year certificate holder it usually is not.
Spending a year in Bermuda does not automatically end your tax residence in your home country. If you remain tax resident in a high-tax jurisdiction under its day-count or ties tests, your worldwide income stays taxable there, Bermuda's zero rate notwithstanding. US citizens in particular remain subject to US tax on worldwide income wherever they live; the certificate changes nothing about that.
Where the certificate can form part of a genuine tax move is only if it sits inside a properly executed change of residence, with the home-country residence cleanly broken and, often, a longer-term plan beyond the one-year permit. On its own, the digital nomad certificate is a lifestyle and mobility tool, not a tax outcome.
Note too that Bermuda funds itself through payroll tax, customs duties and other indirect levies, and the cost of living, especially housing, food and imported goods, is among the highest in the world. Budget realistically.
Costs, housing and practicalities
Beyond any government application fee, the real costs are accommodation and daily living. Rental housing in Bermuda is expensive and supply is limited, so secure a place early and expect to pay a premium. Health insurance, school fees if you bring children, and shipping or buying goods locally all add up.
Banking as a temporary resident can be handled, but many certificate holders simply continue to use international accounts and cards, given the short horizon. If you do open locally, source-of-funds diligence applies as it does anywhere reputable.
Getting to and from Bermuda is straightforward, with regular connections to the US east coast and the UK, which is a large part of the appeal for people who still need to touch base with home markets. Connectivity also matters for the work itself: reliable internet and a sensible time-zone overlap with both London and the eastern United States make Bermuda genuinely workable for someone still serving clients or colleagues in those markets, in a way that more remote islands are not.
Who it suits, and who it does not
The certificate suits remote professionals and founders who want a genuine year abroad in a safe, well-run, English-law jurisdiction, who can absorb a high cost of living, and who are clear-eyed that this is about lifestyle and optionality rather than tax. It suits families who want to keep everyone together for a year and who value Bermuda's safety, schools and proximity to home markets.
It does not suit anyone hoping a year on the island will quietly erase their home-country tax bill, anyone needing to work in the local economy, or anyone seeking a route to permanent residence, which this is not. Those goals require different instruments.
How HPT helps
We help clients use Bermuda's digital nomad certificate for what it is, a clean, flexible way to spend a year abroad, while making sure it fits the larger picture. Where a client genuinely wants to change tax residence, we design and document that move properly, with the home-country exit handled first and Bermuda placed in its correct role. Where companies or other income sources are involved, we keep the structuring coherent and compliant.
If a year working from Bermuda appeals, talk to us early so the permit, the timing and your tax position all line up.
