Overview

Grenada operates one of the Caribbean's most distinctive citizenship-by-investment programmes, and it is frequently the first programme we discuss with clients whose priorities reach beyond travel convenience. Citizenship is granted in exchange for a qualifying economic contribution, and it confers a passport with strong global access alongside one feature no other Caribbean programme can match.

That feature is Grenada's eligibility for the United States E-2 Treaty Investor visa. For entrepreneurs who want a structured route towards living and operating a business in the United States, Grenadian citizenship can be a strategic stepping stone, which is why it commands a premium in our advisory work.

Grenada also offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a wide range of destinations and, notably, to China, an unusual advantage among comparable programmes.

Who it suits

This programme tends to fit:

  • Entrepreneurs interested in the US E-2 visa route
  • Investors with business or family ties to Asia
  • Families wanting a second citizenship with the option to add dependants

It is well suited to those seeking long-term mobility and structuring flexibility rather than a quick travel fix.

Cost and what is really involved

Two principal routes exist. The first is a non-refundable contribution to the national transformation fund, scaled by family size. The second is an investment into government-approved real estate, typically held for a defined minimum period before resale.

Beyond the headline figure, applicants should budget for due diligence fees, government processing charges, and professional costs. We always present the full all-in figure rather than the marketing number, because the difference between routes can be material once holding periods and exit options are considered.

Tax and lifestyle

Grenada does not impose tax on worldwide income, inheritance, or capital gains arising outside the country, which is part of its appeal. We are careful to stress, however, that holding citizenship does not by itself change your tax residency; your obligations remain governed by where you actually live and are tax resident.

The lifestyle proposition is a genuine one: a stable, English-speaking democracy with an unhurried pace, though most of our clients hold the citizenship for mobility and structuring rather than as a primary home.

The process and timeline

The process is run through licensed agents and is rigorous by design. In outline:

  • Engage an authorised agent and complete enhanced due diligence
  • Select the contribution or real estate route
  • Submit the application and supporting documents
  • Make the qualifying investment on approval and receive citizenship

Processing commonly takes several months. The due diligence stage is thorough, and applicants with complex backgrounds should expect additional questions rather than treat approval as automatic.

How HPT helps

We assess at the outset whether the E-2 pathway is realistic for you, since that often drives the decision. We then prepare a clean, well-evidenced file to reduce the risk of delay, manage the licensed agent relationship, and coordinate the citizenship with your wider tax and succession planning so it serves a clear long-term purpose.
